At Forelock and Load, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of the shooting community, providing not just the best gear, but the best advice. With the Government’s announcement today regarding the lead ban in ammunition, effective from 1st April 2029, we know many of you have questions.

While 2029 may seem a way off, the transition starts now. Here is a clear breakdown of what is changing, what is staying, and how we can help you prepare.

1. The 2029 Deadline: What is Changing? From 1st April 2029, the use of lead ammunition will be prohibited across the UK for the vast majority of shooting disciplines. This includes:

  • All Shotguns: Whether you are in the hide or on a high-bird drive, the move to non-lead alternatives (such as steel, bismuth, or tungsten) will be mandatory.
  • Full-Bore and Small-Bore Rifles: The lead ban extends to target shooting and deer stalking.

2. The Exceptions: Calibres under 6.17mm and Elite Athletes The Government has recognised that for certain sectors, an immediate or total switch isn’t yet technically feasible.

  • Smaller Calibres: Currently, .22 CF and .22RM are exempt from this ban. This also includes air rifles for both target and live quarry.
  • Elite International Athletes: To ensure our competitive shooters remain world-class, elite athletes competing at an international level will be granted an exemption to continue using lead for training and competition.

3. Why the Three-Year Lead? The transition period until 2029 is designed to allow the industry to cycle stock and, more importantly, to allow manufacturers to refine non-lead technology. It also gives you, the shooter, time to ensure your current equipment is “Steel Proofed” or to discuss trade-in options for modern alternatives.

Hull Cartridges
A change from lead to non-toxic for both clay and game shooting.

4. How Forelock and Load Can Help: You don’t need to navigate this alone. Our experts in the barn are already well versed in the latest non lead cartridges and copper rifle ammunition.

  • Gun Inspections: Not sure if your favourite side-by-side can handle high performance steel? Bring it in. We can check your chokes and proof marks. If needs be, we can arrange for your gun to be steel proofed.
  • Try Before You Buy: We stock a range of non-lead alternatives from leading brands like Hull Cartridge, Fiocchi and Lyalvale Express. We will be increasing what we offer as we get closer to the 2029 deadline. We recommend trying a few boxes through the coming seasons to get a feel for the different cartridges.

Conclusion: The shooting community has always been one of conservation and adaptation. While the 2029 ban represents a negative shift for shooting, we really need to look to remain positive and continue supporting shooting as a whole throughout the country.
