This actually happens more frequently than you would probably imagine.

There tends to be two main situations for people to stumble across guns.

  • Moving in to an old house and clearing it, before starting renovation works.
  • A bereavement, and a gun has been hidden away for many years, and you are helping to clear the house.

In either instance the first thing you should do is notify the Police. If you are not familiar with guns or rifles, please do not touch the weapon in case it is loaded. If you have found any ammunition, please give this to the Police as well. They will always advise you on the best course of action.

The Police will collect the guns from where you found them and get them booked on to the Firearms Register. If we are your local Registered Firearms Dealer, they will give you our number and we can have a conversation about how we can assist you. We can arrange for the guys to be delivered to us, or we can collect them on your behalf. Once they have been booked in and are on our register, we can either deactivate them and return them to you, add them to your shotgun or firearms certificate or offer them for sale or destruction.

Whilst it is a stressful time when you come across a gun, we can help with the process to make sure that everything is legal and above board. If you are unsure of what to do and you have found a gun, you can call us on 01284 811032.
