Stubben Slide and Lock

The Stubben Freedom bridle has been revised and now offers a wider range of fittings than before. It is also worth practising with the Slide and Lock fittings on the cheek pieces, so you are comfortable with how they work. You need to press the sides of the fitting quite firmly, to release the lock and slide the metal work up the cheek piece in the direction of the browband. This opens the fitting so you will be able to attach the bit. To close the fitting, press the leather loop over the metal pin and slide the metal clasp over the pin back towards your thumb, until you hear and feel it securely lock. We think it is worth practising a couple of times, if you are not familiar with this particular fitting. Check out our You Tube Video HERE

Fitting the Stubben Freedom Bridle

When fitting the bridle we recommend you follow these steps.

  • Take the bridle without the bit and place it gently on your horse’s head.
  • Check that the headpiece is positioned away from the ears and is sitting comfortably.
  • There is some adjustability across the poll and you can use this to fit the bridle to your horse’s ears.
  • The browband will sit away from the face and will curve down. This is how it has been designed, and with use, will soften and mould to your horse’s face.
  • Look at the noseband and make sure it is sitting two fingers below the protruding cheek bone. It is cut away here which allows for a comfortable fit.
  • The throatlash fastening sits flush against the face and this is what will keep your bridle in place. This shouldn’t be tight but should be snug and lightly imprinting on your horse’s coat.
  • Fasten the noseband and you will see that it fastens from each side. The specially shaped custom shaped padding sits on the jaw and this ensures the buckles do not sit on the bony structure. You do not want the noseband to sit tightly or restricting the horse but you do want it to be snug, so it isn’t moving around.
The noseband padding allows for a comfortable fit on the underside of the jaw.
  • Drop the cheek pieces a few holes and now you are happy with the fit, remove the bridle and attach your bit.
  • Gently place the bridle back on your horse’s head and adjust the bit accordingly so you have the bit comfortably sitting in the mouth.

The bridle will find its place on your horse’s head when you ride in it and will naturally bed in to where it sits.
