Description

DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND WE ARE NOW OFFERING A HIRE SERVICE FOR MICKLEM BRIDLES. WHY LOOK AT CHANGING TO A MICKLEM….. THIS INNOVATIVE BRIDLE WAS DESIGNED BY WILLIAM MICKLEM WORKING WITH THE SKELETON OF THE HORSE’S SKULL. THE SHAPE OF THE MICKLEM AVOIDS PRESSURE ON THE FACIAL NERVES, UPPER JAW MOLARS AND THE PROTRUDING CHEEK BONES, THUS CREATING A BRIDLE WHICH CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE TO YOUR HORSES’ WAY OF GOING BY ELIMINATING THESE MAIN AREAS OF DISCOMFORT.

HOW TO FIT AND USE THE MICKLEM BRIDLE Always attach the bit straps to your bit first, with the buckle on the outside and the end of the strap facing upwards, then attach to the Micklem Bridle using the bit rings at the bottom of the cheek pieces. For some varieties of bits with long sides a shorter attachment than the bit straps may be needed, in which case one of the set of clips should be used. The key to fitting your Rambo® Micklem is to ensure that the front nosepiece is approx 2 to 3 inches higher than the corners of the mouth and at least six fingers above the nostrils. To confirm you have the right position, put your fingers either side of the nose at this point and you will be able to locate where the fragile ends of the nose bones begin. The front nosepiece should not be below this point. Then use both the cheek pieces and the bit strap or clips to fit your bit at the normal height. Doing up the Top Strap This should be fastened flush with the skin, not loose like a throat latch, so that it holds the bridle in place. It will sit naturally on the cheek-bones at approximately 45 degrees to the vertical. Doing up the Bottom Strap This fits like a standard dropped noseband, underneath the bit and flush with the skin. This fitting actually allows the horse freedom to open the mouth a little, but when this happens the bit will rise up encouraging the mouth to close. Fitting the Bit Clips which act as the Tongue and Bar Protector Use the appropriate length clips to join the bit to the side rings and you have a unique tongue and bar protection system. If a rider gets left behind, or a horse and rider pull against each other, the clips will shift the extra pressure to the nose rather than on to the tongue or the very narrow bars of the mouth. This is a similar action to the Australian racing noseband. This will help the horse to accept the bit quietly and discourage them from putting the tongue over the bit. It is also very useful for novice riders who have not yet learnt to go with the motion of the horse.

I decided to try a Micklem bridle on my ex racer about 5 years ago. I wanted him to be a comfy as possible in his work. I haven’t looked back since! They are like Marmite though, horses either love them or hate them. Both my TB’s love them and go really well in them. The design of the bridle is great for sensitive horses, and the leatherwork is padded. Its fully adjustable. Cleans up really well too.

I am delighted with my new Micklem bridle. My horse can be quite sensitive and won’t tolerate a flash. In the Micklem bridle he feels quieter, more responsive and far less fussy than in any other bridle I’ve ridden him in. For the first time since owning him I’m able to safetly hack and jump my horse in the same bit that I use for dressage and schooling and without a martingale! All thanks to the Micklem bridle and the exceptional service from Forelock and Load. The Micklem bridle is very different from a traditional bridle so not the easiest to fit, but Kirstie was on hand to offer lots of advice and allowed me to trial the Micklem bridle in 2 sizes over the 10 days to ensure we found the perfect fit for my horse. Even responding to an email and photos of my horse wearing one of the bridles whilst on holiday!
